Candido Enzo Jacuzzi (24 February 1903 – 7 October 1986) was an Italian immigrant to the United States of America. Candido Jacuzzi invented the Jacuzzi whirlpool bath for his 15-month-old son, Kenny Jacuzzi, who was born with rheumatoid arthritis.
Jacuzzi Brothers was founded in 1915 by seven Italian brothers from Casarsa della Delizia in Northern Italy, led by Giocondo Jacuzzi and Candido Jacuzzi. The company made wooden propellers under military contracts, based at 2043 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, California.
The terms “Jacuzzi,” “spa,” and “hot tub” are often used interchangeably, but there are some subtle differences in their origins and usage. Here’s an explanation of each term:
- Jacuzzi: The term “Jacuzzi” is often used to refer to a specific brand of hot tub or whirlpool bath. The Jacuzzi brand is well-known for its hydrotherapy products and has become synonymous with hot tubs and spas in some regions. Originally, Jacuzzi referred specifically to a hydrotherapy jetted bathtub developed by the Jacuzzi family in the 1950s. Over time, the term has been used more broadly to refer to any jetted tub or hot tub.
- Spa: The term “spa” generally refers to a therapeutic water treatment or relaxation experience. It can encompass a range of activities, including massages, facials, saunas, steam rooms, and hydrotherapy. In the context of hot tubs and residential use, a spa typically refers to a self-contained unit designed for hydrotherapy and relaxation purposes. Spas often include jets, heaters, control systems, and seating for multiple occupants. They are primarily used for soaking, relaxation, and hydrotherapy benefits.
- Hot Tub: A hot tub is a large tub or small pool filled with heated water used for relaxation, soaking, or hydrotherapy. Unlike a spa, which is often associated with therapeutic treatments, a hot tub is primarily intended for recreational use and relaxation. Hot tubs can be either portable or built-in and may include features such as jets, seating, control panels, and filtration systems. Hot tubs can be installed indoors or outdoors and are typically made of acrylic, fiberglass, or wood.
In summary, while the terms “Jacuzzi,” “spa,” and “hot tub” are sometimes used interchangeably, a Jacuzzi originally referred to a specific brand of jetted bathtub. Spa generally refers to a self-contained unit designed for hydrotherapy and relaxation purposes, and a hot tub is primarily used for recreational soaking and relaxation. The specific features and uses of these terms can vary depending on regional and industry conventions.
